SUMMARY:CANCELED: Rocky Hill Trail Pollinator Garden Installation: Day 1
DESCRIPTION:CANCELED \nUnfortunately this project will not be able to go forward\, so this installation has been canceled. We hope you will join us for future opportunities to connect with the community. \nRocky Hill Trail Pollinator Garden Installation \nAssist local students and residents in creating a native pollinator garden at the northern end of the Rocky Hill Trail! Students participating in SuSol’s Environmental Justice Leadership Fellowship will be working with community members to prepare the land for a native pollinator garden at the front entrance of the garden. We will be weeding\, laying down burlap and mulch on the first day\, and preparing the space for planting on the second.

SUMMARY:Intro to California Food Forests Talk
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 25 \nIntro to California Food Forests\n10 am-12 pm\, Heritage Presbyterian Church\, Benicia \nPlants\, like people\, thrive in community. As an ecological designer who works with permaculture strategies\, Joshua Burman Thayer appreciates how nature evolves its plant communities so each member benefits from its associations with the others. That’s valuable knowledge to bring into the garden. Permaculture is a way of design that links resources\, use and harvest into a connected whole. Although it is a complex system of design\, permaculture is perfectly suited to community-scale production. Learn more in this informative talk. Register here.

SUMMARY:(Online) Permaculture 101: Patterns & Principles Talk
DESCRIPTION:Permaculture 101: Patterns & Principles\n6:30-8 pm \nRegister here. \nDid you know that you can create sustainable landscapes that work with nature to create systems that work together in harmony for healthier soil\, plants\, planet and people? Permaculture is an approach that reflects on patterns in nature and offers principles that can be used to shape a regenerative path that heals the environment and can be carried from how we work with the land to how we approach our internal work\, how we interact with others and society at large. Join Vital Cycles’ Anne Freiwald and Lydia Neilsen as they share the fundamentals of permaculture\, and see how you can apply it to your life\, your community and your landscape.

SUMMARY:(Benicia) Soil Biology to Grow Garden Abundance
DESCRIPTION:SuSol’s Michael Wedgley will discuss how soil microbes are integral to growing the healthiest plants possible with zero pesticides or fertilizers. \nLearn more and register here! \nTopics will include \n\nWhat is the Soil Food Web and who are all of the players in the soil (i.e. bacteria\, nematodes\, protozoa\, fungi\, etc.)\nHow soil microbes do all of the gardening for us\nWhat is nutrient cycling (nobody ever fertilized an old growth forest)\nBiology to stop battling against disease\, pests and weeds\nNot all compost is created equal — what type of compost is best for feeding the soil\nStrategies for incorporating microorganisms\n\nThere will be time for Q&A at the end. \nThis class is generously funded by Republic Services \nAbout Michael Wedgley: \nMichael Wedgley is Sustainable Solano’s Solano Gardens program manager\, a permaculture designer\, and a certified Soil Food Web Lab Technician. He specializes in edible and native landscapes\, as well as applied microbiology for the elimination of pesticides and fertilizers. As a Soil Food Web Lab Technician\, he assesses the microbiome of soils to help growers and gardeners understand the biological needs of their soil.
