DESCRIPTION:Visit demonstration food forest gardens in Fairfield and Vacaville from 9 am-1 pm Saturday\, June 4. This is a great opportunity to see what types of plants thrive in the climate of Central Solano and learn ways to capture rainwater and install simple greywater systems to counterbalance our increasingly dry weather. \nTour our demonstration edible gardens fed by secondary water (roofwater and/or laundry-to-landscape greywater system) in Fairfield and Vacaville! Learn simple techniques that you can apply to your own yard to create a vibrant\, food-producing ecosystem using water wisely. Ask our food forest keepers questions\, enjoy the gardens\, be inspired and get ideas on how you can work these design principles into your own yard! \nLearn more and register here! \nHow it will work: \nFairfield and Vacaville Demonstration Food Forest Gardens will be open 9 am-1 pm on Saturday\, June 4 \nItinerary pickup and special events:  \n\n9-11 am: A detailed itinerary with garden locations will be distributed at the demonstration farm site in Vacaville. The address of the site is 3942 Foothill Drive\, Vacaville. There are two entrances associated with that address. Please use the entrance with a Sustainable Solano sign by the white fence leading to the parking lot.\n9 am-1 pm: Self-guided tour of gardens\n11 am: Laundry-to-Landscape greywater talk and tour at Healthy Futures\n10 am-12 pm: Chicken keeping and Food Forest plant education at Mangia(Lets Eat)\, repurposed items used in landscape\, chickens\, native sedge field\, fruit trees and more!

DESCRIPTION:Have you ever seen a food forest? Are you interested in growing your own food or want to replace your lawn with a more sustainable landscape? Our Annual Food Forest Tour is back! Do not miss out on the chance to tour our demonstration edible gardens fed by secondary water (roofwater and/or laundry-to-landscape greywater system) in Benicia and Vallejo! \nLearn more and register here! \nLearn simple techniques that you can apply to your own yard to create a vibrant\, food-producing ecosystem using water wisely. Ask our food forest keepers questions\, enjoy the gardens\, be inspired and get ideas on how you can work these design principles into your own yard! \nHow it will work: \n\nYou can choose to tour for the whole day or for half a day on Saturday\, April 23\nBenicia Demonstration Food Forest Gardens will be open 10-1 pm\nVallejo Demonstration Food Forest Gardens will be open 1-4 pm\n\nItinerary pickup and special events: \n\n9-11 am: A detailed itinerary with garden locations will be distributed at Avant Garden in Benicia (400 First St.) This itinerary will include all of the demonstration food forest gardens in Benicia (open in the morning) and Vallejo (open in the afternoon).\n9 am: Sustainable Solano Program Manager Michael Wedgley will give a talk at Avant Garden on how to have garden abundance with healthy soil biology\, including the creation of compost extracts and teas to add soil biology where it’s needed. He will then apply compost extract to the community shared plot at the garden\, which grows food for donation. ***Bring a mason jar and get some compost extract while supplies last.\n12-1 pm: Itineraries for the Vallejo garden sites (open in the afternoon) will be available at St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School (1500 Benicia R.\, Vallejo)\n12 pm: Learn about Sustainable Solano’s local food program at St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High School. The Local Food team will have details about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs in Vallejo and Benicia where you buy directly from local farms\, favorite family recipes from our Youth Cooking Program students\, information about local farms\, agritourism\, and how to engage in food rescue and recovery. Stick around for student demonstrations and check out beehives and honey there on campus\n\n
