This is your opportunity to be part of that process! \nRetail experiment participants age 16 and older will receive a $30 stipend in recognition of their time. To receive the stipend\, you must complete pre- and post-experiment surveys and participate in the experiment. Select a 1-hour time slot to secure your space and stipend. \nThere will be children’s activities while adults participate in the experiment.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that food waste from our kitchens affects climate change?  Rotting food in the landfill creates methane gas that heats the atmosphere.  Learn how you can cut back on household food waste\, save money and resources\, and be part of the solution!  Join Stephanie Oelsligle Jordan\, Sustainable Solano’s Local Food Program Manager\, for a cooking class that explores what to do with those strawberry tops\, wilting herbs\, extra zucchini\, and more!  Chef Steph will walk through several recipe ideas\, discuss food storage strategies\, the real meaning of “best by” and expiration dates\, and demonstrate a seasonal salad with bottom-of-the-jar Dijon vinaigrette. Information on new food waste laws affecting Benicia will begin the class and an audience Q&A / discussion will take place at the end. \nThis class is generously funded by Republic Services.

During this event we will be installing a water-efficient dripline irrigation system in the Swenson community orchard and having a community garden work day. Heath Griffith from Grow with the Flow will teach an introduction to this sustainable irritation method\, and then lead a hands-on installation. You can expect to learn the differences between dripline and other irrigation methods\, the advantages of drip irrigation\, and how to assemble the components on a landscape. Whether you’ve been wanting to dip your toes into this subject\, or brush up on existing knowledge\, you are welcome!

We will be weeding\, spreading a small amount of wood chips\, and planting Spring vegetables. \nThis project is in partnership with Emmanuel Apostolic Church and Emmanuel Arms Inc. This church has served the community with weekly outreach and supply distributions for over 10 years. All of the food grown in this garden goes back to the community in hot meals or as fresh produce. \nThis maintenance day will consist of: \n\nWeeding\, raking wood chips\, spreading soil into beds\, and planting\n\n\nPlease wear closed toe shoes and sun protection! (i.e. hat and sunscreen)\nBring working gloves\, a water bottle\, and a lunch.\nYou will NOT need a copy of your ticket.\nIf you are under 18: your legal guardian must sign a release of liability when you check-in.\nVolunteers should not attend the event if they feel unwell.
