Our Story
Started in 1999, Benicia Community Gardens (BCG), largely an all-volunteer organization, worked relentlessly to bring local sustainable food to Benicia. Over the years, BCG’s reach expanded from a single community garden at a local church to two community gardens, a community orchard, seven permaculture demonstration food forests, Community Supported Agriculture partnerships, a “Land Caretakers” sustainable landscaping education program, a food donation Share Plot, and a beloved monthly “What’s for Dinner?” educational cooking potluck series.
As the programs expanded beyond Benicia, it became clear that the organization had outgrown the name “Benicia Community Gardens.” In May 2016, after serious reflection and long deliberation, the BCG Board made the decision to rename the organization to “Sustainable Solano” – a name that better reflected the organization’s broadening scope, mission and vision.
