This public, hands-on installation workshop series will create an environmentally resilient garden in Suisun City providing an opportunity to learn about rainwater capture, water-efficient drip irrigation and how to plant and mulch for a water-wise, sustainable garden that builds healthy soil. This garden is being installed as a response to the home and yard entirely burning in a 2020 fire. In fact, the large maple tree in the front was the only thing that survived. We hope that this project will serve as an example of how we, as a community, can respond to environmental hazards and lift each other up.

Day 1: Saturday, Dec. 3-Earthworks

• Learn how to create swales, which are trenches that capture rainwater in the ground, divert roofwater swales, sheet mulch to protect and build healthy soil
• Learn small scale strategies to grow plants during flood and drought conditions
• Tour an existing demonstration food forest garden across the street
• Volunteer tasks: digging a swale, moving and spreading wood chips.

Day 2: Saturday, Dec. 10-Planting & Drip Irrigation

• The focus of this day will be learning about the plants selected and their functions in the garden.
• Volunteer tasks: planting the garden and installing drip irrigation.
• We will also have the opportunity to visit an existing food forest across the street to visualize what a matured garden looks like.
