This public, hands-on installation workshop series will create a demonstration food forest garden in Vallejo providing an opportunity to learn about rainwater capture, water efficient drip irrigation and how to plant and mulch for a water wise, resilient garden that builds healthy soil and yields food.

Day 1: Saturday, Nov 12-Earthworks

• Learn how to create swales, which are trenches that capture rainwater in the ground, divert roofwater swales, sheet mulch to protect and build healthy soil
• Learn small scale strategies to grow plants during drought conditions
• Learn organic approaches on how to deal with crab grass, we will be implementing strategies to stay on top of this hardy plant
• Volunteer tasks: digging a swale, moving and spreading wood chips.

Day 2: Saturday, Nov. 19-Planting & Drip Irrigation

• Learn what plants help your garden thrive by working together as an ecosystem and how to install drip irrigation
• Volunteer tasks: planting the understory, installing drip irrigation and moving wood chips

* wear closed-toe shoes, sun protection, bring gloves and refillable water bottle

* Lunch will be provided.
