About the Vallejo People’s Garden
Founded in 2010 by Vilma Aquino, the Vallejo People’s Garden was built with a commitment to sustainability, incorporating LEED principles into its infrastructure. From 2011 to 2023, the garden donated its produce to local food banks and the Christian Help Center, helping provide meals to approximately 70 clients each day.
Today, VPG’s focus is on growing food that reflects the rich diversity of our community. For example, they cultivate chayote, a vegetable commonly used in Hispanic and Filipino cuisines. In addition to donating produce to local food programs, VPG also supports an after-school program, veterans, and volunteers — many of whom are seniors or millennials facing housing insecurity.
VPG is also dedicated to educating the community on sustainability and the importance of preserving pollinators, including the Western Monarch butterfly. These butterflies, which over-winter on Mare Island, have seen a dramatic decline of over 90% in their population since the 1980s.
In 2024, Vallejo People’s Garden hosted the first Bay Area Butterfly Festival, in partnership with The Monarch Milkweed Project and the Solano Resource Conservation District. The event raises awareness about the pollinator crisis, with a special focus on the Western Monarch butterfly, sustainability, and environmental stewardship, while offering practical ways for individuals to take action and make a positive impact on the environment.

The Vallejo People’s Garden has been designated by Sustainable Solano as an Urban Ag Hub. Urban Ag Hubs are community gardens that have a reliable base of support, a resilient independent management structure, and regular bountiful harvests. These Hubs serve as key entry points for local residents who wish to get involved in Urban Ag. These gardens receive materials and programmatic support from Sustainable Solano as we work together to increase the volume of locally grown produce in Solano County.
